On Saturday, February 20, 2010, “The Numbers
Court” came to Kindergarten at Rosman Elementary. Football, Basketball, Softball, Soccer and any other number shirt made up the “Countess’s” court to make Saturday School fun and meaningful. Following the celebration of 100 days of learning on Wednesday earlier in the week, the number idea was expanded to include wearing numbers for Saturday fun.
All Kindergarten Teachers and Instructional Assistants wore crowns on their heads as they were known as Transylvania “Countess” for the day.
All of this was an effort to make Saturday School both fun and meaningful for the students. We made Saturday count! Saturday was day 103!
In Ms. Keever’s classroom, students made fun math equations out of their shirts. One student wore a jersey with the number 71, one student was the plus sign, another student wore a jersey with the number 1, and one student represented an equals mark. The total of the student equations was 72.
Fun math centers were implemented. Students enjoyed working with counting manipulatives, reading number literacy and counting books, using 100 boards for counting, math activities on the computer and a math game 10 Monsters in the Bed.
The final treat was watching the “Number Crew” video from United Streaming which meets the NC Standard Course of Study for Kindergarten. Following all this Saturday fun, the “numbers” returned home to start their weekend.
