High Student Performance

  1. TCS served as a state model for student accountability model
  2. Consistently ranked among the top 2-3 school systems in North Carolina with regard to performance on the state ABC’s
  3. SAT scores above the state and regional average
  4. Student attendance rates that rank among the best in the state
  5. Elementary, middle, and high schools consistently ranked in the top ten in North Carolina based on student performance on ABC’s
  6. Implemented technology plan that provides students and teachers with tools needed to meet North Carolina technology competencies
  7. Implemented technology programs to prepare students for jobs of the 21st century: Cisco Academy, Network Engineering, and Web Page Development.
  8. Over 98% of eighth graders meet NC standards for technology competencies on their first attempt
  9. Approved K-12 career guidance plan
  10. Implemented a K-2 assessment program

 

Safe and Orderly Schools

  1. Steady improvement in pupil to adult ratio
  2. Passage of a $24 million bond referendum in November 1997
  3. Successful completion of building program as of September 2000
  4. Incidents of crime in schools below state average
  5. Successful award of COPS grant for school resource officers
  6. Completion of a system-wide safety plan
  7. Placed radios on all school and activity buses
  8. Successful opening of Davidson River Alternative School
  9. Opened Rosman Middle School in Fall 2000 to reduce school size
  10. Implementation of Middle School Task Force recommendations
  11. Successful partnerships with Communities In Schools, Schenck Job Corps, and Blue Ridge Community College to create alternatives for students at risk

  1. Successful three year campaign to raise local teacher supplement to 5%

  7. Begun study of custodial and maintenance costs

  10. Received grants from state and federal resources for technology, reading improvement, exceptional children’s program, school resource officers, library books, juvenile justice programs, and quality management practices.

Partnerships

  1. Increased number of volunteer hours in the schools
  2. Implemented New Century Scholars Program that provides support and college tuition for at-risk students
  3. Through Communities In Schools partnership, Workforce Investment Grant was received to lower dropout rate. A Career Learning Center was placed at Davidson River School. Also, the Cisco Academy was implemented.
  4. Implemented a successful partnership with Schenck Job Corps for at-risk students
  5. Implemented a strings program in elementary school with Brevard Chamber Orchestra
  6. Provided Arts in the Schools programming with TCArts
